SA Media celebrates 46th National Press Freedom Day, remembering Black Wednesday Today the South African media industry is commemorating the 46th anniversary of National Press Freedom Day, also marked as Black Wednesday in the history of South Africa. On Wednesday the 19th of October 1977, the apartheid government banned independent media and took journalists into detention in an attempt to silence the the media from reporting on the murder of black consciousness leader Steve Biko and other brutal acts of the apartheid regime. As we reflect on this day, SABC News and Current Affairs’ Group Executive Moshoeshoe Monare and Director of Media Monitoring Africa William Bird join us in the studio to discuss how far the media industry has come, and the extent of the power plays between media control and media freedom in South Africa today.
