The director of Media Monitoring Africa, William Bird, told News24 that misinformation surrounding the recent conflict was “worse than anything we have seen before”.
He said there was so much information being shared that it had become almost impossible to know what was real.
Bird said:
In this instance, the reality is that there is now so much content on these issues, whether it’s from individuals claiming to be on the ground, interviews with ministers… there is just so much that it is almost impossible to determine whether something is or isn’t misinformation or disinformation.
“Knowing what’s real and what isn’t and what’s misinformation and disinformation, you don’t even get to ask that question to begin with because there is such a deluge of information on these things,” he said.
