The central issue is the Sunday Independent’s comparison of Karyn Maughan to Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl, following her critical article about Independent Media’s chairperson, Iqbal Survé. Given the significant implications of this dispute for media freedom and ethics, MMA’s involvement is crucial. Our organisation will provide expert insights to assist the Press Council in understanding media standards and the impact of media coverage on public perception. Additionally, this case offers a valuable opportunity for MMA to observe the Press Council’s handling of such disputes, informing our ongoing advocacy for a free, independent, and diverse media landscape in South Africa.
